Compiling and installing ndiswrapper: part 1

'su -' in as root and type out everything you see on the lines below. In case you didn't get it already, when you see something on a new line, that means that you're supposed to hit [enter] and when that command is done executing, type the next line.

su - cd D*/*s make distclean make make install

Now that it's installed, we need to install the driver for the wireless card. in this example, i'm using my wireless driver from my Dell drivers CD. The name of my driver files are bcmwl5.inf and bcmwl5.sys, those are the only two you should need. BUT, remember to substitute my driver name with yours in the commands. So if i type 'dosomethingwith bcwl5.inf', then you need to change the part that says 'bcmwl5.inf' to whatever the name of your inf file is.

The depmod command will create the proper modules and files, and the '-a' switch - well, i don't know what it's for! In the manual for depmod, it does not list an '-a' switch, only an '-A' switch - yes, that's entirely different, remember Linux is case sensitive to EVERYTHING. I do know that the '-A' switch is supposed to scan for new modules BEFORE it bothers writing new configuration files, that way if there are no new modules, it doesn't waste it's time writing the same file. Ndiswrapper's website installation guide says that if you give that command, and it gives you an error, do NOT continue, because you'll be adding bad modules. If you have any trouble with this, i strongly advise you to go to their website and read THEIR installation manual (see the note on previous page about the availability of the ndis project's documentation).

ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf

Now, if you issue the "ndiswrapper -l" command, it will list the installed drivers, and should appear something like what you see below. Note that the alternate driver is listed. In most cases we will have to disable the alternate driver because it directly interferes with ndiswrapper functioning properly. We will do that on the next page.

ndiswrapper -l bcmwl5a : driver installed device (14E4:4318) present (alternate driver: ssb)
